Dakin (1995 : 31-35) offers the idea that listening to a text message, any
audience must express their understanding of what is listened because the audience are
not just the information recipients but they have the roles in showing language
knowledge and have purposes in listening. Effective listening must consider the
listening objectives, purposes of listening, listening environments, critical listening,
combinations of general knowledge with the language knowledge, sound and content,
and practicing to improve listening comprehension. Dakin also says that the research of
English listening mostly study in the language laboratory. Studying listening
comprehension has the main purpose to understand the lessons. Learners should have
trained themselves to listen and understand the listening activities that students do
during listening such as taking notes and answering questions, writing a paragraph or
dictating.
