For the archaeologically mined, Kanchanaburi is most interesting, as the incidents which occurred in World war ll have recently and quite by chance led to the discovery of neolithic burial sites in the region. It was from here that the Japanese put the Allied prisoners to the There Pagodas Pass at the Burmese border. It is estimated that 100,000 oppressed labourers as well as 16,000 Allied prisoners of war lost their lives due to beatings, starvation, overwork and malaria when constructing the railroad. In Kanchanaburi, endless rows of war graves mark the resting places of 6,982 of those Allied Soldiers. The bridge of the River Kaew is worth a visit. A few Kilometres north of Kanchanaburi there are the ruins of the Khmer town of MUANG SING, City of the Lion. The area is full of caves and waterfalls such asthe Erawan or Elephant Falls, Kao Pang Falls, Sai Yok falls etc.
