Radial and axial bearings can be found in most rotating equipment and require lubrication to operate properly. Radial bearing are designed to pervent up-and-down and side-to-side movement of the rotating shaft; axial bearings, often called thrust bearings, are designed to prevent back-and-forth movement of the shaft. Radial bearings can be found in a variety of designeds such as ball bearings, friction or sleeve bearings, rolling elecment bearings, and shielded bearings.
