The client retention assessment should be done during the audit completion stage but before the Firm offers itself for re-appointment. The general frequency of this assessment will be as follows:
a) All listed clients and high risk clients (C1, C2 and C3) should be reviewed by the Engagement Partner and its retention approved by the Quality Control Partner on an annual basis. (Refer to characteristics in the “Client Profile Rating Form for Client Retention” to determine the client profile rating)
b) Non-listed clients classified as medium risk and/or poor performance (B1, B2, B3 and A3) should be reviewed and its retention approved by the Engagement Partner on an annual basis.
c) Clients classified as low risk and average to good performance (A1 and A2) should be reviewed and its retention approved by the Engagement Partner on an annual basis.
d) However, should any of following events take place, a special retention assessment should be conducted immediately:
i) changes in ownership and/or management, management behaviour, financial status or operating conditions,
ii) problems have been uncovered by other auditors serving foreign affiliates of the client.
For high risk clients, where the retention is assessed annually, concurrence on the retention is required from the Quality Control Partner and a review for completeness by the Quality Control Manager. Where the Quality Control Partner is the Engagement Partner, the approval of the Managing Partner shall be obtained.
Upon completion, these forms and any attachments should be filed in the permanent file.
