Slit ventricle syndrome (symptomatic small ventricles) is a condition that occurs several years after the ventricular shunt is implanted. The reported incidence varies from 6.5% to 10% of patients with shunts (Kestle, 2003). These patients will manifest symptoms similar to those with shunt malfunction, but the most common symptom is headache. Treatment currently consists of conservative management and observation, and surgical intervention is recommended only if the symptom interfere with ADLs (Kestle, 2003).
