Modified Bases
The modified bases are formed by alteration of the purine or pyrimidine ring only after the parent base has been incorporated into the nu acids. Examples of some of these modified bases are 6-methylaminopurine, 7-methylguanine, and 5-methylcytosine (Figure 13.7) the term minor base is frequently used and indicates only that these modifed bases are found in small quantities relative to adenine, guanine, cytosine, uracil, and thymine. The modified bases found in urine are a direct measure of the turnover of nucleic acids in the cells.
