In one of the most representative Korean gardens, located inside Changdeokgung Palace, the lower hill area has been filled with simple scrubs and grass; this rep resents simple nature rather than a "garden" in the typical sense. When foreigners such as Americans or Japanese visit Korea, they are often surprised by the simple and plain nature of Korean gardens. Korean gardens are places where one can go to appreciate nature in its original form. Koreans try to find beauty by becoming one with nature through their gardens, and for this reason they tend to dislike artificial things. These preferences can also be seen in the design of normal Korean houses, for example. Koreans prefer not to build a garden in their front yard. Entering a typical garden of a Korean house, one finds only simple nature behind a small bush clover front door. Koreans enjoy viewing mountains and trees beyond their yards while sitting low and near the ground; additional decorations are not important.
