In order to acquire the qualities that are needed to be an effective minister as well as to handle the issues that arise from the psychological and sexual dynamics that emerge in ministry relationships which have both moral and legal consequences, it is important that priests and religious be given adequate help to grow up as psychosexually integrated persons. This will enable them to be happy in their life and spend themselves in doing good. Otherwise they may ruin themselves and cause untold harm and irreparable damage to others.
Such formation requires the presence of capable and well-qualified formation personnel (see Kuttianirnattathil, Lendakadavil & Pereira, Ch 23, volume 2). Sadly many of the formators in India have not received adequate preparation for the momentous responsibility that the Church and religious congregations have placed on them (see Mannath, Ch. 20, volume 2).
Achieving psychosexual integration is a lifelong process. It has many components and is a process that is both challenging and rewarding. The different chapters in these volumes are designed to help the candidates and professed religious, as well as formators, to engage in this process successfully.
