In process consultation, outside consultants help organizational members perceive, understand, and act on process events. These might include, for example, workflow, informal relationships among unit members, and formal communications channels. It is important to recognize that consultants give organizational members insight into what is going on, but they are not there to solve problems. Rather, they coach managers in diagnosing interpersonal processes that need improvement. If organizational members, with consultants’ help, cannot solve the problem, consultants will often help organizational members locate experts who do have the requisite knowledge (see Workplace Issues).
