Carbon sources useful for the production of cellulose
may be used as monosaccharides or mixtures thereof
such as glucose and fructose, disaccharides such as
sucrose, and mixtures of monosaccharides and disaccharides.
In addition to single carbon sources as shown in
Fig. 2, mixtures of glucose and fructose or glucose and
sucrose in various ratios and comprising 2.0% HS
medium were examined (Table 1). Cellulose production
and final pH of the culture broth were determined after
6 d in shaking cultures. Final pH of the culture broth increased with decreasing glucose in the mixtures as shown
in Table 1. Amounts of cellulose produced in the media
containing mixtures of glucose and fructose were higher
than those produced in media containing glucose alone,
fructose alone or the mixture of glucose and sucrose.
The maximum amount of cellulose of 3.82 g/l was
obtained from the mixture of glucose and fructose in a
ratio of 1 : 3.
