A small study on HBV knowledge among HBV
positive African-born women in the Bronx, New
York found that almost half of the respondents
(46%) had never heard of HBV.Additionally,
those who were aware did not understand how
HBV is transmitted, treated, and prevented. Our
results similarly suggest that African-born immigrants
have low levels of awareness and knowledge
of HBV. Cost and health literacy issues also
have been seen to hinder African immigrants from
seeking care in other studies.
