After discharge planning, the final RPIW focused
on improving the triage process. Standard work was
developed for a greeting RN we name ‘‘The Wizard,’’
who not only greets patients as they arrive, but also
conducts a short assessment to determine the level of
patient acuity. This early assessment process provides
a timely determination as to whether the patient requires
urgent treatment or can safely wait for medical
care. To be as efficient as possible, a parallel process
is used with a patient access representative to complete
initial registration. This new workflow eliminated
repetitive work for staff, as well as decreased the
time it took the patient to be assessed by a provider.
