We will always have borders, some of which are easier to cross than others; and people will always cross these borders because we are curious and because we strive for more.

Of course a borderless world is possible, and any adventurous young Swiss or Singaporean passport holder is probably one of the freest persons ever to explore beyond any borders on the surface of this planet (because they have money and trustworthy passports – guess why? Efficient government!!!)

We do not have to erase borders, we just have to make it easier to cross them. Efficient government and making and implementing laws and regulations as close to home as possible are just common sense, and these do of course necessitate borders. However, governments can also make it easier to cross borders – governments are simply there to certify and reduce risk – just like it is nice to have a certified academic degree that a potential employer in another part of the world can trust, it is also very nice to know that you are not a mass-murderer from across the other side of the globe.

The EU is the best experiment (Yeah, I know, but bear with me) for keeping borders, yet creating a borderless region for its citizens, goods and services. I think the current financial turmoil just shows that actually it is us, the people, who need to think beyond borders, because capital, markets, goods and services are already global. If we all learned more languages, were willing to relocate (you can visit your family lots, don’t worry) etc., then you can go where the work is, learn some cool new cultural traits and then move back some years later - although you’ll be smitten by then and move to a third place to improve the situation from a new perspective!
