for the operation and maintenance of the scheme. The disciplinary sub-committee was responsible for
handling disputes or conflicts among members of the cooperative following established by-laws. The agricultural
sub-committee was responsible for the training of farmers on good farming methods and
monitoring their performance. The marketing sub-committee was responsible for procuring of inputs to
be sold to members of the BVIS and searching for markets for the rice cultivated in the scheme. Finally,
the finance sub-committee maintained financial records of the cooperative.
After its construction, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) financed rehabilitation
works of the scheme in November 2005 at a cost of US$320,000. This involved headwork and
settling basin rehabilitation, main canal relocation and land leveling of 597 ha of land. These works
were jointly done by JICA, government, cooperative, and farmers andwere completed in 2006 (Johnstone,
2011).
