This may be an old thread but i do have some knowledge on this area, advancing the pump by turning it will work, to explain why here goes:
The CAS on all engines not just this one does signal TDC No.1 and 4 however its actual position will be around 30 degrees before TDC to give the ECU a 'heads up'.
Also the speed sensor in the injection pump rotates at HALF crank speed! as it is mounted in the injection pump which turns at HALF crank speed.
The Base timing for the engine is set by rotating the pump however the inductive pickup is mounted on the pump housing so turning the pump housing invariably changes the position of the sensor, advancing the timing throughout the rev range.
Also ALL diesel engines with a cold start feature ADVANCE timing on cold start up to increase cylinder pressures and aid in smooth running.
