Adult educators can use the ARIK-A to help administrators and practicing professionals
determine level of reading instructional knowledge, and then tailor professional development
goals for individuals and/or programs. The ARIK-A manual provides worksheets and
interpretative profile analyses forms and produces percentage mastery and standard scores,
with the population mean set to 100 and the standard deviation to 15 for scales and
composites; these resources can help examinees target their instructional goals. The ARIKA
has equivalent forms and can be administered in its entirety or in scales, which makes it
useful as a pre- and post-measure of global or targeted professional development. Also,
because its content is formed upon research-based principles, the ARIK-A should be especially
useful for professional development aligned with these principles. Professional development materials from McShane (2005) based on adult reading instruction research
(and consequently tied to the content of the ARIK-A) are available from the U. S. Department
of Education publications website: http://www.edpubs.gov/Productcatalog.aspx?KeyWord
