The Sampson and Clark model provides students and researchers with the components of an argument and the specific criteria to assess the quality of an argument in science. This approach has been shown as an appropriate, productive way to both introduce students to the complex task of generating arguments and evaluating the quality of the arguments constructed. The quality of an argument is evaluated by considering different criteria that take into account how the conclusion agrees with the evidence, the predictive capacity of the conclusion, the sufficiency of the evidence and its quality as well as the conclusion’s consistency with theoretical knowledge, and its use to understand the focus question.
