The Manager, U.S. Maternal Health & Human Rights Campaigns will report directly to the Interm Senior Director, U.S. Policy & Advocacy and will develop and lead advocacy campaigns to promote Black maternal health, particularly in the South. The Manager will focus on amplifying the leadership of Black women and mobilizing a broad base of stakeholders – policymakers, reproductive justice community, public health professionals, medical community, and advocates – to advance state level policies that further reproductive rights as human rights. The Manager will also work in strong collaboration with the Black Mamas Matter network and its steering committee on designing and executing advocacy campaigns. As this is a new role and program area for the Center, the Manager will seek to demonstrate the potential to expand our efforts and create new opportunities to make an impact in the South and beyond.
The preferred location of this position is Atlanta, GA; alternative locations may be considered.
Responsibilities:
The Manager’s primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Conceptualize, design, and implement an advocacy campaign to advance policies aimed at improving maternal health outcomes, particularly those that eliminate racial disparities in maternal mortality and morbidity;
Manage the day-to-day work of the campaign(s), including overseeing the work plan, setting agendas, coordinating the work of a broad set of partners, and being accountable for achieving key accomplishments;
Communicate regularly and strategize collaboratively with the Black Mamas Matter steering committee members in creating, identifying, and collaborating on advocacy goals, activities, and projects;
Engage in building the capacity, expertise, and resources of Southern advocates to promote evidence-based policy solutions at the state and national levels;
Conduct joint advocacy and policy initiatives with partners in the South aimed at ending discrimination and access barriers and promoting government accountability for poor maternal health outcomes;
Collaborate with local public health and medical sectors to address gaps in research and build support for evidence-based policy solutions;
Research and engage opportunities for coalition building with other progressive groups and movements outside of the reproductive rights, health, and justice sector;
Plan various campaign events, including lobby days, public education forums, and community mobilization events;
Work closely with the Center’s communications team to develop advocacy opportunities and support digital advocacy efforts to promote the Black Mamas Matter network, advance specific campaign goals, and use human rights framing that depoliticizes reproductive rights and empowers communities and local advocates;
Work closely and collaboratively with others on the Center’s federal and state policy teams to integrate their strategies with the campaign goals, as appropriate;
Work with the state policy and advocacy team to identify opportunities for collaboration across regions and issue areas, specifically to advance proactive state policies;
Design tools to evaluate the impact of campaign work and capture learnings for future application;
Develop materials and publications to support and promote advocacy campaigns and work with the Center’s design team and Black Mamas Matter members to create and promote them; and
In partnership with the U.S. Legal Program, engage allies to support the Center’s litigation on maternal health, leverage pro bono legal assistance, and engage attorneys in the private bar.
Qualifications:
Strong commitment to the Center’s mission, purpose, and values;
Bachelor’s degree required; MPH or other relevant Master’s degree preferred;
Minimum of 6-8 years of relevant experience such as public health state policy or advocacy work; experience working on an advocacy or issue-oriented campaign; community organizing/mobilization, especially in the South; and programmatic experience with human rights or social justice organizations/movements;
Experience living and working in the South required (GA preferred);
Experience in convening allies, building partnerships, and engaging in policy advocacy, advocacy training, research, and program development;
Highly innovative, creative, and collaborative; ability to thrive in a start-up project environment;
Strong writing skills, including an ability to convey complicated matters to broad audiences; comfort with public speaking and presenting;
Ability to develop and implement a strategic, multi-pronged advocacy strategy with short and long-term objectives;
Strong inter-personal skills and ability to build relationships with stakeholders from a variety of sectors;
Project management experience, including experience in planning and executing a variety of events and of leading projects or specific efforts;
