Frequently, however, signal sources that produce small output voltage signals() and which possess a larger source resistance value () are encountered. Strain gauges, unbalanced Wheatstone bridge signals (), and thermocouples bonded directly to grounded equipment are examples of such sources. In attempting to measure the output signal of thesesource with floating, signal -ended amplifiers, common-mode voltage in excess of 5mV would probably be encountered (leading to inaccuracies in the measurement data). Use of an input-guarded differential amplifier would be a better choice. Most of the common-mode current that would ordinarily flow in the GROUND-LOOP path would be diverted into the alternate GROUND-LOOP path of the cable-shield circuit.
