For an individual on the postconventional level, moral values
reside in conformity by the self to shared or sharable standards, duties
and rights. In stage 3a, there is a perspective of a rational individual
who is aware of values and rights prior to contracts and social
attachments. There is a recognition that moral and legal points
sometimes are in conflict with each other and that it may be difficult
to integrate them. Utilitarianism is in focus with the provision of the
greatest good for the greatest number of people (Kohlberg, 1976,
1984; Magun-Jackson, 2004).
