Publicity is considered as a credible source of information and is more influential
than other marketing communication tools such as messages in advertisement, sales
promotion, or direct marketing (Bond & Kirshenbaum, 1998). The superiority of news is
corroborated in notions studied through communication literature. Previous studies
suggested that news leads to enhanced learning and recall (Cameron, 1994), significant
believability (Shwarz, Kumpf, & Bussman, 1986), more positive attitudes (Straughan,
Blesk, & Zhao, 1994), and higher behavioral intent (Straughan at al., 1994). In the practical field, public relations practitioners traditionally have insisted the superiority of
publicity over other forms of promotion, particularly advertising. Practitioners frequently
attribute the superiority of publicity to the third-party endorsement accorded by news
workers (Hallahan, 1999). With the notion that publicity is superior to other
communication tools, the present study particularly focuses on consumers’ response to
negative publicity about companies and their brands.
