Experiments for RT-PCR included
treatment additional to those assessed by microarray analysis; that
is, (i) no epiBL, no fungus and (ii) no epiBL, fungus. This enabled
us to determine that three of the four epiBL-upregulated
genes studied were also upregulated by Fusarium spp.; these were
the cytochrome P450, the pathogenesis protein PR-4, and the
pathogen-induced protein WIR1A (Fig. 4A, C, and E; P < 0.05).
The effects of both Fusarium spp. and epiBL on the transcription
of these genes was additive. The epiBL-upregulated ABA-induced
protein 7 gene was not responsive to Fusarium spp. (Fig. 4B).
