The audit disclosed improper disposal of non-sharp items into sharps containers such as dressings and packaging, resulting in the rapid loading of one of the containers. Towards the end of the session, the container was filled over its recommended fill line, causing preventable risk to the HCW as described by NICE (2012). Additionally needle safe medical devices were not employed during the audit, which was not adhering to best practice (EU Council Directive 2010/32/EU); a pertinent sharps safety policy. Its primary focus is to prevent exposure to BBV through proficient staff training and the use of needle- safe medical devices after appropriate risk assessment and management for sharps procedures (RCN, 2011). However, positive sharps procedures were revealed through the audit; the disposal of sharps was performed into appropriate sharps containers which were safely positioned at the point of care, compliant with the EU Directive.
