Helps with assisted work When giving a detention, I normally do so for missing an important task or not using class time wisely. In both cases there are normally underlying reasons that can be explored and supported more effectively after school. Kids need to run around and blow off steam at recess time, so I am not in favour or detentions that take that away. I am in favour of detentions after school where the primary goal is to better understand and support the student. (And sometime to send a message about independent work when the only difficulty is not understanding the content rather it is 'making' the time to do it.)
