Cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens), from which the oleoresin of capsicum is extracted, is distributed worldwide and has the following names in different countries: pimenton (Spain); poivre rouge (France); cayennepfeffer (Germany); kajennepeppar(Sweden); cayennpeper(Holland); pepe di caienna(Italy); pimentao-de-caiena(Portugal); kayenskipyerets (Russia); la-chiao(China); and filfilahmar (Arabic). In Japan, cayenne pepper is not known, but the closely related chili pepper (togarashi) is available. Cayenne pepper may colloquially be called Guinea pepper, Spanish pepper, African pepper, chillies, or bird pepper.8
