This difference has
not only had a large impact on the density and diversity of
understorey frugivore communities [1,19], but also
suggests there is a fundamental divergence in the way
in which canopy trees regenerate [18]. A cross-continental
comparison of understorey dynamics, based on the CTFS
plots, is the best way to investigate this further. Equally
interesting would be studies of the functional consequences
of the differences between rainforest regions in
the plant families that dominate climber and epiphyte
communities [18,20], although complete census data are
rare for both.
