and physics, and mathematics, and toxicology (or poisons),
47. and epidemiology (or diseases), and well, you get the idea.
48. Then, they focus all that scientific training,
49. add strong ethical standards, also known as "doing the right thing,"
50. and bring all these skills to the workplace.
51. In the end, industrial hygienists are about people —
52. listening to people, talking with people, working with people,
53. protecting people from workplace hazards.
54. Together, workers and industrial hygienists form a team
55. where everyone plays an equal part,
56. where industrial hygienists bring their technical knowledge to the workplace,
57. and where workers bring their personal knowledge and expertise
58. about their work, their values, and their relationships.
59. And this team shares one purpose,
60. something that we all value,
61. that everyone understands how to protect themselves and each other at work,
62. so that everyone goes home in good health at the end of each day.
63. Now at work, there are a lot of things going on —
64. workers, managers and supervisors, budgets and costs,
65. equipment and materials, production —
66. and industrial hygiene works with all of these.
67. First, industrial hygiene connects workers' physical safety
68. with environmental health.
69. This protects not only workers,
70. but also everyone in the surrounding community.
71. Industrial hygiene unites workers and managers,
72. so that everyone comes together to protect each other.
73. Industrial hygiene also links healthy workers with a healthy business,
74. where healthy workers create a healthier and stronger business,
75. with fewer illnesses, fewer injuries, and fewer costs,
76. all creating greater health and greater productivity for everyone.
77. But most importantly, industrial hygiene connects work and home.
78. because when everyone's health is protected at work,
79. those same workers can care for and protect their families
80. and friends when they return home.
81. It is the right thing to do.
82. Today, hundreds of millions of workers across the globe
83. remain at risk from work hazards.
84. Over 2 million people worldwide
85. die each year due to work-related illnesses and injuries,
86. with 160 million new cases of work-related illnesses occurring each year.
87. And in addition to all the human suffering, these illnesses and injuries
88. create an economic loss of 4% of the world's gross national product.
89. But with the improved use of industrial hygiene,
90. just imagine how we could use that money to improve people's lives,
91. improve their work conditions,
92. and improve productivity where they work.
93. So, how can we improve industrial hygiene — occupational hygiene — where we work?
94. The American Industrial Hygiene Association, AIHA, can help.

95. AIHA connects industrial hygienists and workers around the world,
96. providing a network of experts
97. where people can come together, identify problems, and find solutions.
98. In addition, AIHA provides education and technical expertise,
99. helping governments, organizations, and companies
100. to develop the policies and practices that protect workers.
