The interest in the recovery and conservation
of swine breed Celtic stronghold survivor
in Spain the so-called Celtic or Celtic trunk
has grown rapidly in the
last couple of years, after a major setback
census from mid-century to almost
their complete disappearance during the decade
of the eighties.
This interest recovery of the
regional government of Galicia,
aware of genetic, social, cultural decline
and economic would mean the disappearance
of this race, has sponsored, coordinated and made
up, directly or indirectly, media
and technical infrastructure necessary for
the recovery of the race, which at the same
time resulted in a latent involvement of
farmers in the recovery program,
which has been demonstrated with the creation in early
1999 Breeders Association
Celta pigs (ASOPORCEL), in the
City of Triacastela, Lugo,
and also with the launch by
this association of a draft recovery,
preservation and promotion of swine breed
Celta.
Currently the pig breed morfotípicamente Celta is
well defined, has an association
of livestock breeders supported by the
regional administration and what is more important
is social and scientifically recognized
the meat product quality as demonstrated
in the social interest awakened the
race and the high demand for copies. These
factors together make augur a promising future
for this old acquaintance, who lives in the stables
and fields of Galicia.
In this publication are presented and discussed
the actions taken by the administration
Galician through the Department of Agriculture,
Livestock and Agro-Food Policy and by
the association of pig farmers Celta
(ASOPORCEL) for recovery of that
race, as well as those activities that
are to be developed in the near future.
