A surge in dengue cases has been reported in the country. The provinces of Nakhon Pathom, Phuket, Sisaket, Songkhla and Trat are most affected. Although dengue is endemic or consistently present in Thailand, activity of the virus has been higher since the start of the year, as compared to the same period in 2015. Dengue is spread by mosquitoes and can cause a range of symptoms. Some people, especially those who have been infected with dengue before, get a more severe form that can lead to fatal complications. There is no specific treatment. Although a vaccine has been developed, it has only been licensed in Brazil, Mexico and the Philippines.
Other viruses spread by mosquito bites have been reported in Thailand previously, including Zika virus.
Prevention
Avoid mosquito bites. When outdoors, use an effective insect repellent and cover as much skin as is practical. Use "knockdown" sprays to rid indoors of mosquitoes. If you develop symptoms make sure you see your doctor as you may need to be tested for mosquito-borne illnesses.
