Consequently, it is not just individual attributes that affect job performance and
turnover, but also the relationship between those attributes and the social environment
in which the person is working. So, as one example, research shows that
relational demography—the similarity or difference between a given individual and
others in that person’s work environment on things such as tenure in the organization—
predicts communication with colleagues, social integration, and as a consequence,
turnover (O’Reilly, Caldwell, and Barnett, 1989)
