Lesson SOC 31
Task: Demonstrate basic body rhythm.
Prerequisites: ADT 1, ADT 2, COG 6
Concept: This concept can later lead to social activities such as dancing and can improve enjoyment of other social events such as exercising in a group (SEN 30). The main objective is to promote body movement in response to music. Exact timing or rhythm is secondary to enjoyment of the group process. If a student particularly appears to enjoy this type of activity, it may indicate that he or she learns best through movement. In this case, the concept should be incorporated into future learning experiences.
Behavioral Objective: When the student is requested and agrees to participate in an activity related to responding to music in a kinesthetic (movement) manner, the student will participate and move his or her body in basic rhythm to the music to a 75% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Music of various rhythms and equipment to play that music.
Task Analysis:
1. Present different types of music of varying rhythms to the student and attempt to determine to which type of music he or she best responds or appears to enjoy.
2. Based on the information obtained in Step 1, play the identified type of music and physically guide the student through the process of moving his or her body in time to the music.
3. Continue Step 2, gradually reducing the physical prompting and replacing it with gestural prompts or cues.
4. Continue Step 3, reducing all prompting until no guidance is needed.
5. Introduce the concept into a group setting or hold a dance to encourage the independent use of these skills.
