solvent waste post-extraction. Modifications to the ‘‘official’’ methods
are often employed in research and industry. For instance, the
original Folch method developed in 1957 (Folch et al., 1957) required
a double extraction with chloroform from the aqueous
methanol and water phase to isolate the lipids. A common modification
used presently is a single extraction step after incubating
the samples in chloroform/methanol for at least 24 h (Taha et al.,
2008). A comprehensive comparison of the AOAC, ISO and Folch
methods including common modifications has not been
completed.
