The SOS Management System
Management Concept 1: Active Daily Management
Active daily management (ADM) is integral to sustaining
any newly developed process or procedures established
through improvement projects.9 In a Lean
organization, frontline staff are expected to be continually
developing solutions to address issues impeding
the organizations optimal functioning. In a Lean
organization, leaders support frontline staff by being
present within the workplace. This is traditionally
known in the TPS as being at ‘‘Gemba.’’ In a healthcare
context, the patient interaction is where value is
being created. At Gemba, leaders observe the changes
being implemented, engage staff, and continually build
their capacity to problem solve and increase value to
patients. The key tenet of ADM is that leaders are
highly visible, proactive, and responsive to the needs
of patient care staff.
