In practice, however, diverting waste to
other uses through reuse, recycling and
energy recovery has the greatest
potential for improving waste
management in the medium term.
Examples highlighted in this paper
have illustrated that when developed in
a manor appropriate to local
conditions, such approaches can
dramatically reduce the quantity of
waste that enters the formal solid waste
management system and provide
moderately priced alternatives to
disposal of waste in landfills.
