The generation of waste paper and plastics at UC in 2012 was about 133 and 20.75 tonnes, respectively. The 20.75 tonnes of plastics were used to enhance the energy content of fuel pellets produced from waste paper. By assuming a waste paper-to-fuel pellet conversion rate of 90% (Pirraglia et al., 2010), the estimated waste-paper fuel pellet production based on the 2012 data would be approximately 138 tonnes per year (Table 2). The pellet production
system was assumed to be powered by electricity. The electricity use was estimated from a study performed by Pirraglia
et al. (2010) for wood pellets manufacturing. From these assumptions, the average electricity consumption was calculated to be 552.4 kWh/tonne pellets and the total electricity input for making 138 tonnes fuel pellets was estimated to be 76,438 kWh per year.
