In the present study, approximately 140 μmol photons m−2 s−1
of PARwas used. This is the optimumlight condition for both species suggested
in the literature for the lower stocking density (Fortes and Lüning,
1980; Martinez and Rico, 2004), and shallow tanks (0.25 m2 × 0.2 m
deep) in our experiments. Under these conditions, Chondrus and Palmaria
with a high stocking density will be self-shading, therefore reducing
photosynthetic rate of the seaweed
