IT3510 is a designated Service-Learning course [5] at our
university. Students are required to complete a 20 hour project
that applies advanced Linux skills used to address a computing
problem for a community partner. A community partner is often
a non-profit service-centric organization within the community.
Because of the Service-Learning project requirement, up to a third
of the students will drop the course. Once POGIL teams are
organized at the beginning of the semester, POGIL team roles
should and did rotate weekly. However, not only did the lack of attendance play havoc with missing POGIL team member
responsibilities, but the POGIL teams themselves had to be reorganized
about every three weeks during the semester. In one
case, towards the end of a recent semester, there was only one
POGIL team member left in his team.
