There are three primary types of hearing loss: presbycusis, sociocusis, and occupational. Presbycusis is hearing loss incurred as part of the normal aging process, While sociocusis is hearing losses related to nonoccupational noises in the daily environment. For the most part, presbycusis is generally more prevalent at the higher frequency ranges, and men suffer from more exposure to nonoccupationally related noise than do women. Figure 58.3 illustrates the average threshold shift among women and men with increasing age form all three types of exposure combined.
