Water is one of the essential elements associated with human life. From the time immemorial man needs water not only for drinking but for cultivating the food grains. Tradition and technology of constructing artificial water resources like well, step-well, pond and tank are surviving in Mewar from proto-historic (Chalcolithic) period. As there are no big river in Gujarat and Rajasthan, the problem of water supply becomes acute. This deficiency has been recovered, to some extent, by the construction of various types of artificial water structures like lakes, ponds, well and stepwells. Of all types of water structures stepwell attracted most attention of art historians. Stepwells are generally typical of regions which extremely hot, dry and long lasting summers where ground water is often the only available source of water during the hot seasons (Hegewald 2002: 167.)
