A startup is a fundamentally different kind of business than 99.9% of the businesses in the world. America and businesses here are nearly all part of the 99.9%. They are businesses like servicing tractors, restaurants, antique stores, a machine shop, etc. A business person in the 99.9% creates a business plan, get's a loan from the bank or and investor and tries to fill a niche in the community. All of these startups are variations of business models that have been done before.
A startup is going to do something different and there are different kinds of startups:
A business run with a completely new kind of business model, like Uber.
A business that creates a completely new class of consumer products like a wearable device
A business that is making or selling new technology like some 3d printers or new software
A business with a transformative business model because of an internal technical innovation
