Through using her Specialized Content Knowledge to represent and justify the equivalence
of the shares, Faith related the logic of mathematics to the logic of the learner and
assisted the group in understanding the student’s assertion from the recording.
In this sequence, we observed additional evidence that the selected teachers used their
SMK to participate by investigating solutions to the tasks and by generating new representations.
Fatima used her SMK to take up and extend the mathematics embedded within
the task, and Faith’s SMK supported a new representation to physically demonstrate the
argument in order to understand the students’ claim from the video recording. Both
teachers’ participation advanced the SMK goals embedded within the task sequence. Kathy
did not participate in any of the discussions in the sequence.
