1. Introduction
The Convention on Biological Diversity entered
into force in 1993 and now (June 2002) has
185 contracting parties. Thailand signed the
Convention on Biological Diversity at the United
Nations Conference on Environment and
Development (UNCED) held in June 1992, in
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Even now Thailand has not yet ratified the
Convention, the country has effectively used
its provisions as guiding principles for
biodiversity conservation and management.
Two of the major outcomes were the
establishment of the National Committee on
the Convention on Biological Diversity and the
development of National Policy, Strategies and
Action Plan on Conservation and Sustainable
Use of Biodiversity, 1998–2002 and 2003–2007.
Details are presented in various chapters of
this National Report.
The aim of this National Report is to present
some of the activities and projects on biodiversity
conservation Thailand has undertaken. After
ratification of the Convention of Biological
Diversity, Thailand will be ready to more
effectively pursue its role to achieve
conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity,
for both national and global benefits.
