engaging thelocalpeopleinthemanagementoftheKCAhasthepotentialtocreaterenewedoptimismin
localcommunities,inrelationtobiodiversityconservation andprovisionofalternativelivelihoodsupport.In
the absenceofsuchacommitmentfromgovernmentandconservationagencies,theongoingrobustnessof
community supportforconservation,inthefaceofacontinuinglackofbenefits andincreasingdeprivation,
is unknown.Effectivebiodiversityconservationmayoccurwhenthereisanunderstandingofthesocio-
culturalandpoliticalcontextoflocalcommunities.Thisisimperativeininvolvingandengagingwith
