3.1. Household characteristics
Out of the 192 farmers interviewed, 35% were female and 65% male. The age of respondents ranged between 17 and 78 years with an average of 43 years. A significant proportion (77.8%) had been educated at least to the primary level and 14.9% had no formal education. Only 1.9% of respondents had tertiary level education. The majority of respondents (87%) were indigenes (of Akan speaking extraction) with 13% being migrants from other districts in the region and from other neighboring regions. There were no significant differences between farmers in relation to gender, age groups, marital status, and ethnic origin, membership of organized farmer groups and in educational background. Therefore, research communities were deemed demographically quite similar in household characteristics (Table 1 ).
