Zilog Inc. is believed to be close to announcing a new version of its popular Z80 microprocessor with an on-chip read-only memory containing personal CP/M, the new version of digital research Inc.'s operating system. The new microcomputer chip is aimed at the low end of the personal-computer market, but should also find wide acceptance among instrument and controller makers, who will be able to eliminate the floppy-disk drive now required to load the operating system in their Z80-based systems. parts should be available from the campbell, Calif., company early in 1984.
