Data from the 2000 census showed a greater shift in population demographics than previously reported U.S. census Bureau, 2001). For example, in 1990 whites in 70 of the largest 100 U.S. cities represented more than 50% of the population; they are now a majority in only 52 of these cities. This pattern of a decreasing white population is attributed to a rapidly growing Hispanic population, a strong increase in Asians, and a modest increase in Americans of African descent. As a result, signifi-cant differences in beliefs about health and illness are becoming apparent among the various groups.
