Paradigmatic and syntagmatic are the two systems that produce meaning in language. According to Ferdinand de Saussure (1913), paradigmatic relations are the oppositions between elements that can replace one another, whereas syntagmatic relations define combinatory possibilities, the relations between elements that might combine in a sequence.
