This article describes issues related to corrosion
of carbon steel weldments and remedial
measures that have proven successful in specific
cases; however, it is still difficult to predict
whether attack will be concentrated on the
HAZ, weld metal, or both areas in susceptible
conditions. Care is also required in transfer of
remedial measures to different applications
because of the complexity of interacting factors
that may lead to additional problems. Frequently,
therefore, corrective measures need to be applied
once a problem is identified, but laboratory testing
is recommended for applications where preferential
attack is anticipated.
