In “A Theory of Justice,” John
Rawls says that his theory of justice concerns a society’s
major social, political, and economic institutions.
His examples include the existence of
competitive markets, basic political liberties, and
the structure of the family. Rawls calls this the
basic structure of a society. G. A. Cohen, in
“Where the Action Is,” argues that there is an important
ambiguity in this idea.
