One of the most important sights in Kefalonia, is the limnospilaio Melissani (cave-lake Melissani) located in Karavomilos, 2 km from Sami. With a length of 160 meters and 40 meters wide, is a jewel of nature that impresses the visitor. . A section of roof collapsed in an earthquake, creating a huge hole through which passes a stack of light and creates shadows and wonderful colors to the waters of the lake.
In the lake there is a small island where found archaeological finds (clay figurine of the god Pan, etc.). 20,000 years old stalactites adorn the space. According to legend, nymph Melissani committed suicide because Pan did not respond to her love.
Visitors can tour the inside of the cave by boat and admire the turquoise waters, the walls and countless stalaktites. Melissani Lake is open to visitors from 9 am until late afternoon every day.
